Title: Hello from the Bonnie Banks
Post by: marinemole on May 01, 2009, 11:19:17 PM
Hello from Balloch on Loch Lomond.

I'm primarily an aeromodeller but I have done ship modelling in the past. I'm friendly with a prolific local ship modeller, Lachie Stewart from the Richmond Club in Glagow, and he is slowly but surely coaxing me back into taking up ship modelling again. As an incentive he is moulding me a hull for the Jeanie Deans so it will be interesting to see how things pan out. Paradoxically Lachie is also interested in model planes and I'm hoping to coax him into flying again. I suspect we're probably like most modellers, interested to a greater or lesser degree in anything modelling.

As I don't have anything meaningful to share at the moment, still messing about with cheapo ARTFs, one of which I managed to sink recently, and as Lachie is completely computer illiterate, I will post details of some of his stuff as time goes on.

As a starter here is an old video of his Flying Scotsman sailing at lomond shores on Loch Lomond. There are some more of his boats on the same channel, including his Bismark, but don't know if of interest to Paddleducks.

Interestingly we quite often sail at the slipway adjacent to the Maid of the Loch which gives a wonderful backdrop for photographs of models.

Hope I haven't rambled too much for an intro.  Look forward to combing through a very interesting site

welcome to Paddleducks!

Although I am from the 'soft south' and now live in Greece, I have many happy memories of indulging in a 'pint of heavy' in the Jack of Diamonds bar at Balloch. I worked in Strathleven many many years ago.

Hope you enjoy the forum.

Stuart

Many thanks for the warm welcome Stuart.

Afraid the Jack of Diamonds is no more, mainly nightclub/disco stuff now but still at least one fairly traditional establishment called the Doghouse.

Have just uploaded some photos of the Maid of the Loch against a snowy background to the Photo Gallery. Might bring back memories.

Hi and welcome -
never seen model boats sailing in Loch Lomond before I'd be to scared in case the jet bikers hit them.
We do go out on Loch Lomond but we prefer to use our bigger boat :)
Perhaps when Talisman is built we might take her up there for a sail - will bring the safety boat just incase :).
Regards
Kim

Have uploaded some very recent pics of the Caledonia to

Will try to edit video soon and post also.

We don't normally sail in the Loch itself but in the lagoon at Lomond Shores or more frequently in the slipway area at the Maid of the Loch.

Many thanks for the welcome.

Regards

Andy

Welcome Andy, to a friendly forum and web site.
I'm an exile who has built 10 model paddlers so far, all of them Clyde built boats, including the attached which you'll recognise in her old colours.

Thanks for the welcome Sandy. She did look so much better in the old colours. The lads doing the restoration said that the decision to repaint her as she is now was down to commercial reasons - the public like the red and black scheme.

Nice model and I have seen photographs of others in your fleet.

Hello Andy

You might like to see Jeanie Deans in her wartime guise......?

Thanks for the link Bob. Have downloaded all the pics to pore over them. I must admit I am tempted, your model looks superb. Where did you get your reference material for the ship in this guise?

Hello ANDY

All the info came from the pictures you see in my gallery.......and since that`s all there is..........nobody can criticise the build!..............I also had the peacetime model to refer to and made educated guesses on what the Admiralty would change......all great fun!

I studied lots of model pictures too, Sir Lancerlot etc, to get the "feel" for what was required.............plus all the rust and muck made a generally nice picture of the completed model

Hoping to sail both ships together shortly, and I`ll post a few pix

All the best.............Bob

Caledonia looks great and seems to just need lifeboats & davits fitted, wonderful model :)
The 'HMS Jeanie Deans' also seems to be progressing well and it will be good to see in action!
Just looking at the photos I'm thinking the 'paddle actuating arms' (for want of a better name) need to be a bit shorter, on the graupner (glasgow) wheels they're more-or-less in line with the hub centre for most of the time...

being an aeromodler could be useful, I have to fly my paddle steamer with  the aileron control moving a weight from side to side to counter an wind as she sails on a scale draft of 1.3/4". R.G.Y.(http://)

Hello RGY

I`ve heard of that method before, but I solved the problem by fitting a keel type weight.....and it worked fine

Hello MJT60a

You`re looking at my paddlewheel before it was set up......the push rods seem to be the correct length......I drew it out on CAD

Hello Andy and a belated welcome from me. Nice to see a paddler in "uniform"!. At present I am building Talisman in her wartime guise HMS ARISTOCRAT, but at present only slowly progressing. I was lucky enough to contact two of her crew who served on her for the whole of the war who could fill me in on lots of little details of fittings , service etc.
Jeannie Deans was only a minesweeper for a very short time as in 1940 she was converted into an"EAGLE" anti aircraft ship when she was totally rearmed. The guns you can see in your wartime photo are 2 pounder pom poms fore and aft. I cant find my eagle boats file but I think her armament was as follows: Four 2 ponder pom poms,  three Boulton and Paul four -gun turrets (ex Defiant turret fighters), one either side of the after funnel and one on a pedestal mount aft of the funnel. She also carried  several 20mm oerlikons. and several twin rifle calibre machine guns (Lewis). For a short while she also carried an unrotated rocket projectile mount. The bridge was heightened with an open bridge above the wheelhouse. The depth charges werent so much for hunting submarines as she was blind (no asdic) but they were used for exploding acoustic and pressure mines.  I wiil search my files out and give you a full rundown ASAP. Regards, waltere.

oh, sorry, yes now I look again it's probably just that the centre is a little bit out of position (in that photo) and will be fine once the master rod is firmly fixed...
