Post by: antopia on August 15, 2008, 07:30:46 AM
Hello everyone.
I am not only new to the forum but to model boats as well
I just about finished my live steam project and was looking for something
to do when it is finished.so I am looking for something simple but it must
have a visible steam plant.I have no idea what is available so I am sure there
would be people to give me advise.

Steven

Hello Steven,

Welcome to Paddleducks.  You're going to receive a lot of good ideas here as to what to build. May I suggest a steam launch? Typically both boiler and engine are visible and the vessel isn't extremely complicated. Many of the members have built them so review the projects that others have done in the "Live Steam" section and see what grabs your fancy. There are a number of kits available as well as plans. I know somewhere someone has the plans for the African Queen.

Here's a steam launch that came up in discussion recently;

Again, welcome

Hello Randy ,
Thanks for the welcome,
I have been looking at a steam launch,I must say this is a very well crafted boat.
I have received some plans for a mb22 engine design by Malcolm Beak from Eddy
(big thanks).long story I have a book with this design in but it is incomplete, now I have
the full plans I will build this engine but I am looking at what to fit it in?,
my questions are huge! as I have no knowledge of boats.
I did manage to talk to someone at Harrogate model engineer show this year about model boat steam engines
which he had quite a few of on display,I never thought to look at what size boat these would
have fitted in.
it looks like I will have to read more.
I have enough engineering skills to build a steam plant but i have never done any woodwork
since school.

Regards
Steven

Steven,

As your only in Middlesbrough, why not come along to the Darlington & District MBC on a wednesday afternoon (12 till 6pm) or sunday morning (8 till 12 noon).

We have a number of members who have built their own steam launches, and I know they would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

You'll find us at The Waterpark, Middleton-st-george, near Darlington on the above days - The postcode is DL2 1JG if you have satnav.

Quite a few Paddleducks members are also members of D&DMBC - Myself, Walter Snowdon, Bob Golder, just to name a few... The kettle is always on, and you'd be made more than welcome.

Regards
Eddy
