Title: Steam Tug Portland, OOPS!
Post by: Bill Hudson on July 14, 2008, 01:39:08 PM
The stern wheel steam tug Portland recently passed inspection and was granted a limited license to haul passengers. On one of its first trips it cruised up the Columbia River to Cascade Locks to have a rase with the Diesel  stern wheeler  Columbia Gorge. During a backing maneuver the Portland lost power in the steam engine that ran the steering.  The boat ran aground on some rock badly damaging the paddle wheel.  She is now in dry dock and not expected to be repaired until late fall.  I had an invite to rid her in September.  Sadly that will not happen now.

I don't know the full particulars of the damage as I only got my information second hand and have not been able to find the total facts yet.
