Title: Erste Donau Dampfschiffahrts Geselshaft - DDSG - DS Hercules
Post by: claudiu_ne2000 on March 26, 2008, 08:09:02 PM
This is my boat model which i`m building since September 2007. Because i don't find any large plans of this kind of ship i use the hull - plans of a another ship called "Zoltan" but like the my model, which has 2 funnels this one has only one...but thanks of the net i found a lot of pictures with similar ships, someone still steaming on the river Danube.

So here is my job

Thank you for your excellent input to the site. I like the look of your model. Is the hull constructed of paper/ card and then fibreglassed? Also,  how long is the model?. I like the plans and photographs you have added they are facinating. I hope one  of our site computer wizards can enlarge them for us (me)!   The armed tug/ gunboat plan you posted, do you know anything of its service history?. Regards, walter.

HEY...

Hello Walter...the steam tug name i`m building is Hercules...Samson class paddle tugs, made by Obuda shipyard Budapest. it`s 65 cm long 12 cm. width ...it`s made by  paper...then i use fiberglass...it`s more easy to me to build it ...for the rest i use wood 3 mm. the problems i have came from the paddle ...because i don't find to buy  a paddle like this http://westbourne-models.com/erol.html?1727x4991 i have to build a pair of paddle.

The armed paddle tug name is SAMSON. like my own. Here you can see more data base about the ship. http://www.papernet.hu/?l=sdetails&lang=eng&i=1698    If you are interested about the ship i can help you.

Here is another paddle steam ship which has been armed during the WW1... http://www.papernet.hu/?l=sdetails&lang=eng&i=194 . as i see all the pictures are in this book http://www.christian-schmidt-fachbuchhandlung.de/product_info.php?products_id=3173&language=en&osCsid=6...65062b6dcb36a94e7e3e8caf8

Hi Claudiu,

very nice model.

If you would be interest, there`s a possibility to make it live steam with a Hielscher ministeam engine.
the engine's weight is only 40 g.
i used this engine at a 80 cm midel and it works best.

See: info@hielscher-dampfmodelle.de

Hello again

Since my last posts i manage to finish 80% of the boat, in the future i try to finish the funnels and the cabins...then all the small things on the deck.

But unfortunately when i try to make some water proves i notice the water line is to low and the paddle sunk to much in the water. But this is because i make a "V" shape hull, not a flat hull like the original ship...my mistake, now i have to find other solutions.

later today i try to make some pictures

@hankwilliams...thanks for the email....next ship will be powered with a steam engine.

PS...during my walks on the Internet i found a interesting model PS Sirius, a plastic model made by Zvezda http://www.fasttrackmodels.co.uk/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=13&products_id=166 on 1/100 scale...if you guys know this model i would like to know the measures of the model and if can be converted to RC.

Hello Claudiu,

The lenght of the original "Sirius" were approximate 37 m. I think with a scale of 1 : 100 the boat will be too small for a functional model, even there must be expected that the stability in the water will be not sufficiend.

But it will be possible to use the plastiv model as basis for a bigger model in a scale of at least 1 : 50, better 1 : 33.
It's very important at this sea going pioneer steamships to make the superstructure as light as possible.
See, what I have replied in this category about "City of Bristol.

Thomas

Hi PD's ...& Clauidu.....the .jpg you posted on 26/3 of the HME-Magyar-Hajoregfistzter...appears to have near three X the vessel beam or width than your model  :hammer...this may explain why your model sank so low in water

When you have time....., spend some hours reading in the Paddle Ducks forum pages.......we all learn by our previous mistakes... :terrific.....regards

i didn`t take any picture because i had to handle the RC . But i will buy some polyester (3mm length) to increase the float ability .  but soon i will take few pics.

Hi Claudiu. I have the Zvevda kit of the PS SIRIUS which though quite an old moulding is still a pretty good kit. I got it to motorise and due to its deep and beamy hull is very suitable for  RC., as long as batteries etc. are kept low in the hull. The paddle wheels are quite big and should propel it well. Save weight wherever possible so there is plenty of scope for additional ballast to counteract the tall sail rig. It will need the rudder doubling in size to have any effect. I would say go for it. Regards, walter.

hey Walter....thank you for the info`s...i look for some pictures of the Zvezda Kit...but no result. Thanks to Thomas...he told me the PS Sirius has only 37 meters in length so on 1:100 scale...the kit is a little bit small, only 37 cm. so i`m in a big dilemma right now.

Can you send me some pictures of the kit?...to have an idea.

Regards Claudiu.

Hello Claudiu,

obviously "Sirius" had been bigger dimensions as I thought. In Liverpool Maritime Museum there is a model in 1 : 96 scale,
it's lenght is 76,3 cm over all. At the page also you will find a picture of the ship:
