Hi. everyone and Seasons Greeting,
I have at last bitten the bullet and decided that the new PS Pevensey will be steam powered following the purchase of 2 unit steam engines from Tony Green. The build, so far, is only up to the keel and bulkheads done so it's early days yet and i am about to decide whether buy or build a boiler. The size I am contemplating will be about 150-170 mm long by about 75mm diameter with a couple of tubes firing is yet to be decided.
If anyone has any suggestions please lets know
Hear you soon

Hi Peter
I gather you can silver solder then.
seamless copper tube with 2/3 10mm fire tubes should be ok.
Go with gas, but only a small gas tank* (unless you have a clack valve to refill the boiler as you go)
metho is easier for the boiler* but needs more care & a blower to draw air over the fire to make it hotter untill you raise steam & use the onboard blower. Then there is the problem of the draft in the smokebox.
* I don't like empty boilers being heated by a gas flame! when the metho runs out the draft stops & the metho generally goes out.

Hi PD's.....mmmmmm Peter.....I looked at our PD WEB links for boilers of the nominal sizing you note & found the following...naturally it is difficult to compare Item to Item....as the sizes together with standard accessories may vary
Model Steam Engines UK 336 to 468 UK Pounds = 762 to 1062AUD
Heron from USA [complete plant = USD3199 - USD1658 for the engine] = USD1541 for the boiler = 1756AUD
ACS from Scotland = 250 UK Pounds = 567AUD

ANTON from France = 470E = 782 AUD
JMC from France = 425E = 707 AUD
From my experience :rant with the President of the AASL [Australian Association of Live Steam] suggests that having a home made model boiler or GAZ tank tested & certified would be a near :nono ...& so I would proceed carefully
Having said this [& before someone suggests I am beating my GUMS].....
My guess is that 95% of model steam boilers produced in OZ are [for model trains] and to registered/certified calculations & design plans - further, apart from the tests...... the local certifier must be satisfied that the workmanship :hammer is of an acceptable standard...as no :oops are allowed
I had intentionally not mentioned the boilers from ANTON or JMC purely from the language translation issue that I have experienced...let alone a Certification translation issue :sos however have now included costs for reference

Firstly to Tony,
Yes Tony I can silver solder so hopefully I will be adequate in doing this part.
Secondly to Derek,
I will be building my own boiler and so far metho burners seem to be the less riskier type as I haven't won Lotto as yet and to import a kit or ready made from europe or England would kill me, that is if I was still alive after wife found out.I have about 5 people in our group that can help from a safety point and also design point.
I will just have to make extra vegemite sangas as payment.
Thanks to both of you for your replies,
