I am a retirerd journalist, 63 years old, living in Finland. I have always been interested about maritime affairs and have written four books and hundreds of articles about ships, shipping and model-making. I have built about 40 models so far and three of them are paddlers. The models of "Elias Lönnrot" you can see on Paddleduck´s homepages are mine. The story of those models is quite interesting: I first made a model wchich led to building of a full-size paddler by the same name. She has been carrying tourists on Lake Keurusselkä, in central Finland from 1986. Later I made a model of that new ship too. Just now I am collecting data for a model of steamer "Suomi" from 1856. Its engines were made in England 1837 originally for the steamer "Storfursten", by Mauldsberg & Fields. I have tried to get information about the engines of british maritime museums, but they never even answer. Those jolly gentlemen...
Maybe some of you paddleducks could inform me about british-made engines and boilers of that time. The engine had 80 hp and was built for a hull measuring 123x19,4x9 feet.
