Title: Delta Queen - 2007 Construction by Chuck H
Post by: derekwarner_decoy on April 22, 2007, 11:29:52 AM
Hi PD - Chuck... I have started this as a new sub folder for your "Delta Queen - 2007 Construction" in the "Construction" main Folder.... as you can see its easy to copy & paste on  the  :computer . so when you get time ... go back to Plans & ??? & where ever  :?:    :?: & repost your messages re the DQ in this...... your sub folder

Much better unfragmented & allows other members to see the history in one sub folder  [building + engine & boiler package + R/C etc etc].....

I did the same for Richard Bundy with his beaut Missippiippissi..... :nono looks like spell check was not working too well this morning in Wollongong :sorry - Derek

So Chuck asked.....

Would anyone know a source for plans for the Delta Queen?

Am a few may already know, I am soon to acquire a Saito Delta Queen kit & want to build a more accurate rendition of the DQ, specifically when it comes to the sternwheel, gangplank & other aspects of the boat.

I've already sent off a letter to John Fryant of Paddlewheels & Props, as well as Dwight Hartman of Hartman Fiberglas RC who produce a 1/50 scale DQ kit to see if they can offer plans, but would appreciate any assistance you fine gentlemen can offer towards getting a set of accurate general plans to research before starting this project.

Thanks!

Chuck

Remember if you are modelling her in California  days or wartime condition that she had a bog hood over the wheel  then

Derek,

Thanks for the hearty introduction & start of a construction post for the Delta Queen!  I'll be sure to post all future updates here.

I now have a set of plans from Dwight Hartman of Hartman Fiberglass RC who makes a 1/50 hull kit of the Delta Queen.  Karl of Microglas http://www.microglass.net was kind enough to contact Mr. Hartman on my behalf & ordered the plans for me over the weekend.   Have been told the plans are for postwar version before the pre-USCG mandated changes.  I guess we'll see what arrives.

I plan to build the model based her look when she flew the Green Line's flag in the early '70s, & will undoubtedly be seeking everyone's expert advice when it comes to building the paddlewheel.  Towboat Joe's tips on his resin castings will be added to my nighttime reading list!

I'll not take possession of the kit until late next month when I get back to the States, but will be sure to post updates as they come about.   In the meantime, I thought I'd post several photos of the Saito kit & steamplant from the eBay ad - more will be put up once I get the actual kit.

Again, thanks for all the support.  I look forward to this build!

Title: DQ Update 4/29/07
Post by: herrmill on April 29, 2007, 03:03:36 PM
Was advised that the DQ plan set arrived yesterday from Hartman Fiberglass & that they are filled with enough detail for what I need to modify the Saito kit:

"The plans arrived this morning, and giving them a quick looking-over, I'd say you got your money's worth. There is a large set, and a small set, and enough detail sections to keep you busy for a while---."

Have been researching both the earlier build of the DQ & her sister, Delta King, as well as the '70s version I intend to reproduce.  I do have to say that the initial California boat does has some appeal to it, but then I wouldn't have that Dixieland-playing calliope to have fun with.   If painted in her wartime version as YFB-56 in navy gray, she would fit in perfectly alongside my 1/72 Gato, but it would probably be prudent to keep her away from my Type VIIc u-boot!

Speaking of calliopes, am thinking that I will use a JJC Mk-2 Old Smokey unit hooked up to a manifold valve & fan assembly in conjunction with the sound unit to mimic the the effect of the actual steam calliope.  Who knows, I may even go as far as put some colored LEDs alongside the pipes to light up the "steam" as the original boat.  Rumor has it the DQ's crew tell passengers that they create this effect at night by injecting different flavors of Jello into the boiler!

Received a reply from Majestic America Line's VP Marine Operations in regards to the DQ's plans.   They offered to go through their drawing files & provide me with detailed drawings for the wheel, stage & other details that I am seeking.  Talk about customer service!
