Title: Can someone help (Plastics problem)
Post by: PSRusty on March 20, 2007, 11:41:02 PM
Guys need a few pointers as the people in my club have never used any plastics and do not know how to work it :rant
to see the boat in question goto constructions PS Pilat
My main problem is a set of stairs I am constructing at the rear of the wheel house it is 130 mm wide (5 inches) and 100 mm wide (4 inches), and 115 mm long. i was thinking of using 7mm by 5mm perspex or something similar or similar wood as i do wish to have a wood grain finish to the stairs.

any help would be appreciated.!  :thinking

I'd probably use styrene in preference to perspex, then stick strips of thin ply onto it for an unpainted look - however!.....
I saw this on a model rail forum (though haven't tried it myself yet) about how to make styrene look like wood... http://www.pacificcoastairlinerr.com/aging_wood/ - if it is painted on the full size boat, you'd only have to do the surface texture without all the messing around with ink and stains  :?

Thanks fer the tip mate thesite had a great idea on how to simulate wood but I try my darndest to use real wood on my ships as I am in the belief that there is no replacement for a genuine reel wood (or Veneer)decking, but i was really in need of info on how to cut it as the scroll saw I use tends to take fairly large chips out of the plastic I'm using I may have selected the wrong type of plastic or need a finer set of blades on my saw but I could not find any styrene in the dimensions I need (around 7mm*4mm)or close to those dimensions.

I also was wondering if anyone knows of a site or info on how to make a stairway as this is my Fifth attempt and Im starting to wonder if a ladder will suffice LOL, But I'd much prefer the large stairs.

Just found a site http://members.shaw.ca/sask.rail/construction/index.html

all about various construction methods really good for the inexperienced builder like myself.
