Title: VERY Large Paddlers
Post by: arrow5 on April 18, 2005, 06:01:39 PM
I wonder if the Forum has a space for a page on very large (manned) paddlers  such as the late Bill Wilkinson`s R.N. paddle tug "Cracker"?   I own a 31ft model of H.M.S. Invincible (1/24th scale) and have been trying to find other large models on the web. So far I have found ocean liners, tankers, motor torpedo boats, battleships, Edwardian warships etc but the only paddle boats are the American houseboats styled as sternwheelers which may not qualify as "models". (two pics from www.modelmania.btinternet.co.uk also Invincible)   Arrow5

They are a fascinating branch of our hobby, but I don't really think there are enough of these super-scale models to justify a seperate message area, however, you're more than welcome to post about them in the "Chat" forum.

If there is enough interest we can always reconsider a seperate area later...

Thanks Eddy, I was prompted to post here as I`ve been in contact with a chap in northwest USA who was planning a manned U.S. sternwheeler...name of TJ, is this the same TJ that posts here I wonder ?  My mind wanders when I see a good looking paddle-steamer, taking holidays in Germany I`ve had a few trips on the PS Ludwig Fessler( no longer steam alas but the linking railway is) on Lake Chiemsee and thought about that ship as a suitable subject. (details on www.chiemsee_schifffahrt.de/) I hope this forum will cover the many European paddle-ships that still operate.  Congratulations on the Forum.

Here's a sternwheeler built back in the 70's. It was on display in the Ohio River museum in Marietta, Ohio, USA. Sorry for the bad photo, I grabbed the frame from an old video tape.

He removes the capstan and inserts a "T" bar to steer the boat.

Arrow5.... I'm not the tj who lives in the north west. I live in Kentucky a mid-atlantic state.

That is the kind of thing I was sure someone would have done. Thanks for posting the pic. Any idea what happened to it ? Pity he couldnt sit inside it, I always think I kind of spoil the effect by having my head shoulders sticking up above the flight deck but there isnt much room below deck and not too many apertures to look out of.  Your handle isnt the TJ I thought was on the forum then ? Do you sign Towboatjoe or sometimes shorten it to TJ ?  Thanks again, Duncan.                                                              Later edit:  Oh dear , oh deary me.....the "senile" post somewhere applies here, how do I make Towboatjoe out of PJ. Thats what I get for living so near the distilleries, shoorlie shum mishtake ! Maybe the old/bold pilot is sitting watching me squirm....speak up TJ....no thats PJ.

Just now and then do I sign tj. Most of the guys that reply to me call me tj. The model may still be at the river museum. I think the man who built it passed away and the model is almosy 20 feet long. he built the model exactly as a real one would have been built. There's over 8,000 bolts in the wheel. I think he may have worked at an inland shipyard when he was young. It is superbly detailed. Here's a photo of my daughter standing next to it a few years back. I wish I had taked photos instead video then.

Hmmm i still think the "goolwa" scale model of the steamer Captain Sturt is the biggest as its 3/4 scale and you can walk and drive and have more than one person on it. They just decided to forget the model and make it there own steamer...but it is known as a model!

Back in the late 40's and 50's  motion picture studios that did war pictures hired modelers to build r/c models as big as 50 feet for them to blow up and burn. I remember seeing a picture of a guy standing on a battleship once with his legs spread apart straddling a gun turrent.

I saw on that 'Fred Dibnah's made in Britain' programme about two weeks ago that there's a 3/4 scale model of the Charlotte Dundas...
Off the subject of paddlers (but on Movies) I read somewhere that for 'Raise the Titannic', they built a 1/4 scale model - complete with simulated corrosion (this was before the actual condition of the ship was known...)

Hey Guys, How do you get the pictures. I put the curser on the jpg but nothing happens. i'm the T.J. from Canada. I'm hoping to build a one man replica of the Souther Belle. or something similur to the boat on google called Showboat. Anybody know if anyone has ever built one of them. Thanks T.J. If I can ever figure out how to post pictures,I have some pictures of a collection of battleships called the Friendship fleet as well as a chap in Michigan that has a scale one man PT-109.

Try right clicking your mouse on the picture and a popup should appear where you can choose "save target as" and you should be able to save the picture to your hard drive.

You have to login again to access the Gallery Pictures - it had me fooled for a while as I never log out of the forum, but the gallery seems to be different!

Do you want to add a picture to a post? If so, at the bottom of the Post a Reply screen, there is a blue line with Add an Attachment, below that is a box for entering a filename to add to your post - a JPG or whatever. Type or use Browse to find your picture, then click Add Attachment, just above Submit. It will come back and allow you to add more files. When finished click Submit and you're done!

TJ,

I think it must be something to do with your browser settings. Assuming you are using Internet Explorer - check under Tools - Internet Options -Advanced and scroll down to Multi-media. Check that Show Pictures is checked. If you are not using IE, your browser will have a similar setting.

I can see the pictures in both Firefox which I normally use, and IE which I have just used to check it out!

If this doesn't work - its down to Eddy who runs this forum for more ideas!

You see I was a normal person until I saw Duncan's aircraft carrier. Then I saw this http://www.bismarck-class.dk/shipmodels/german_models/admiralgrafspeeterra.html  Then I saw "Cracker" and then I found paddleducks and then I told my wife about building a riverboat and now she thinks I am crackers. http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/mandm/PT103mod.htm

You're not crackers at all!! I too want to  build one eventually ...a little 50 foot side-wheeler based on a small tug, and  then paddle my way around the Vancouver Islands..stopping when I want and where  I want!

Just to give you an idea of where I'm starting from.I found these two examples one a sidewheeler and one a sternwheeler .http://www.glen-l.com/designs/special/kepau.html#avail. http://www.simplicityboats.com/pogo.html I figured with the experience on this web site a chap would have a pretty good chance of building a really youneek paddlewheeler.

Oh gosh I looked on all those sites when I was thinking of making my paddler...well I'm sill thinking of it, it's just more real now! :)

on the line of big paddlers you should look into the PS Minimus which I personally think is really a waste. It's supposed to be a model of the Emmylou....so it has small doors and a little captian in the wheel house....rrrrr it runs on real steam and has giant paddle wheels....for a working paddler that size I wouldn't have wasted time and money on making it a model!

You probably have pop-ups blocked TJ. If your using Internet Explorer and Windows XP, click on "Tools", then click on "Internet Options". Then select "Privacy" - At the bottom of that screen you'll see Pop Up Blocker - If there's a tick in the "Block Pop Ups" box, click on "Settings" and enter www.paddleducks.co.uk in the box that says "Address of website to allow" and click on "Add".

Finally, go to the bottom of that screen and set the "Filter level" to Medium.

If your using another browser or some third party software to block pop ups there will be a similar method of allowing pop ups from certain sites...

You may need to reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Hi PD's...T.J and Eddy...this sounds remarkably like the same problem I also had, in my case it was the privacy settings in my firewall that was the culprit...if you are running a firewall then look under the privacy settings...look for ads, and/or pop up level...if this is set to high, or maximum, I think the problem will be this...just set it/them to a lower level (try med) and see if this cures the problem...it did it for me...

Holy cow, son of a gun, hot diggity, Eeeeeehaa. It works. Thanks Barrie. I had to defer to a superior knowledge ie. the young lady that thinks I'm crackers my wife but I am now up and running. I feel like a six year old on christmas eve. Especially after looking at a post by Towboat Joe, Monday April 18 th on the Pioneer. Bingo that is exactly what I'm looking to build. Maybe not to the same degree in detail but that's what I'm looking to build the only difference is I want to be inside. Sooooo since I'm hoping to go to Akron/Canton Ohio to share in the American thanks giving holiday maybe if I can come up with a good excuse we could drift by the Ohio river museum. What a great web site. So if anyone knows any more about the Pioneer, if the chap had any plans etc. please let me know. Gee willikers thanks a million guys.  T.J.

TJ, unfortunately, because of shortage of state and federal funding, the Ohio River Museum In Marietta, Ohio has been forced to be open only on weekends from May through October. You can still see the WP Snyder berthed on the Muskegum River, a flat boat, and the pilot house of the Tell City for they sit on the property. The Snyder will probably be gated off so you can't go aboard. There's talk of refitting her and operating her again. She's been kept in good condition and was hauled out and hull repaired a couple of years ago.

John Fryant, a noted modeler, and myself are members of the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen who started the museum. here is a link to the museum with info.

Aw nuts. Thanks Joe, say you don't have anymore information on the Pioneer model that you posted pictures on do ya. That model is as close as dam is to swearing as to the type of and size of a boat model I'm interested in building. Thanks. T.J.

I don't have any other info in the Pioneer. The photos I had were captured frames from a video I took back in 1993.

If you're ever around Paducah, KY stop in at the museum there and see the 12 foot model of the Delta Queen. I attended several shows with the guy who built it and he always seem to have problems with something breaking down, but it was impressive when it was running. Had a sound system with calliope music. When he passed away his wife gave all his models to the Paducah River Museum.
