So what has everyone got on their christmas lists as far as paddler stuff/models go?
I've never managed to talk my family into buying model boat stuff, so for me it will be the usual boring routine of socks, hankies, and aftershave :(
Does anyone have a better time at convincing family members that boating/model stuff would be a good present to buy?

I always gave my father paddleboat books (including the first, hardcover, edition of Mudie 'Riverboats', about the first book in the field in Australia). That way he had the satisfaction, and I would eventually inherit them back. It didn't fall that way: my brother got the lot, and I had to search to find a more-recent softcover Mudie.
I do have a rather nice Ian Allen pictorial of UK paddleboats in my collection. It has photos of all of the familiar names which feature in the Preserved forum, plus lots of others now gone. A book is certainly a more identifiable gift than two machined brass trunnions.

Roderick

My wife has faithfully promised to turn a blind eye if I purchase a newly reconditioned Unimat lathe that a clubmate of mine is selling!
Even though I'm constantly buying bits and pieces for my models during the year, Jan reckons that I've been a "good boy" this year just gone and have earned one substantial model-related purchase without getting the evil eye from her!
She's a 3SL (the lathe, not the wife!), complete with milling attachment vertical column and bracket, milling table and vice, 3 jaw chuck, drill chuck, dead centres, etc., plus a heap of accessories. :D
Merry Xmas to one and all

I am all taped out getting my wife to agree to a model boat show in Port

Goodness Tony, either your wife is very caring [3SL] or you have been a very good person this past year... a Unimat full set up YUMMO! - next thing you will be ordering is a "X" & "Y" auto feed kit for the milling table..........

Oh & BTW Eddy .. the server must be down [or on something again!] as this is the message I get @ 1600 AEST 5/12 here in OZ so I have posted this on the back of Tony's thread - regards Derek

Well there are three things I do not wish my family mambers to buy for me, my underwear, tools or model stuff. The underwear usuallly does not fit. The tools I usually have (better quality too) and model stuff is uaually something I don't need like an X-Acto knife set (I have five now still in their boxes only missing the blades). Heaven knows they all mean well but they just do not understand, let alone, speak the language of tools and models. :gift

Eddy, just tell the family members that this is WHAT YOU REALLY REALLY etc. WANT :angel ... Mum and Dad are not buying me anything in particular, but they are taking me shopping instead so I can buy what is needed for SJ.. :gift
Or alternatively you could ask for specific shops gift vouchers.. Or money and say it is going towards a paddle steamer.. that usually works.. :trophy
