Title: PS Ryde
Post by: Brian on September 28, 2006, 04:11:14 AM: In the October 2006 edition of the magazine "Old Glory" there is a short article with photos about the PS Ryde. It states that in early August her funnel has fallen onto one of the paddle boxes.

On their web-site I've also found that they covered news about the HLF grant for PS Medway Queen.

For details about the "Old Glory" magazine which covers steam engines world-wide (there articles about Marine Steam Engines) see their web-site - http://www.oldglory.co.uk/inthis.php.

However on the website for PS Ryde (http://www.psryde.co.uk/) I see that this mishap is not yet mentioned.

I think Mark Young who runs the site was offline for a while too, hence no news or photo updates. He posted recently on the Bravenet paddle steamer board though (link below), so I guess he's back online now.

With a quick Google search I found this page of recent photos that confirm that Ryde's funnel has partially collapsed:

From the photos, the funnel itself appears to be more or less intact, still attached to the fiddley top along with the two ventilators, but the fiddley itself has crumbled beneath it. Poor old Ryde.

i have visited the Ryde at the end of August, what a sad sight :cry: :cry: i walked around and took as much as possible photos of her. Unfortunately i cant post the photos to the forum, they are to big 2MB or more but if you want i can produce a CD and send this to you.

The pictures were taken from the adjacent land on 24th September 2005. They are all very interesting as they show the poor state of her hull.

I will be at Island Harbour next week for the re-launch of PS Monarch so will try to get a picture of her. It would be nice to have a shot of Monarch with Ryde in the background . . . .

Sadly past it for the old girl and has been for some time . . there's only 1 paddler I think could be restored thats currently not in the care of a preservation group, she's also Britains oldest paddler (Compton Castle).
