Compton Castle at Truro last year.
-
See - http://www.users.waitrose.com/~thonybrett/
Looking at some other info on line it appears the site she is berthed at is earmarked for re-development. Hope to find out more, I am in Truro in 3 weeks time.

I'd beinterested in hearing from anyone who'd be interested in forming a group with the aim of safeguarding the Compton Castle's future. It would appear her future may well fall into doubt in her current role before too long . . .

As much as I'd like to volunteer, I'm afraid the boat is at the wrong end of the country for me to be able to do anything constuctive.... Family problems (which I won't bore you with!) mean I cannot leave home for more than about two days at a time, and being unemployed I could only ever offer hands-on help rather than financial help :(

Hi Eddy,
I can understand that, Im basically trying to see if there's any interest in people to save her. She's not in immediate danger of being lost but there is talk of redeveloping where she is which are likely to see her moved out of her present location. I've a meeting with the owner in a couple of weeks to talk about the ships future and hopefully end up in a position that should the ship become available a preservation group get first refusal.
Have been giving some thought into relocating the vessel, the transport barge Terra Marique seems a good option if she was to be moved by sea - she could be floated on at Truro and floated off at another location for restoration. Another option would be to cut the ship into sections and transport her by road.
She currently has a bridge between her and open water so would need the sponsons removed and deckhouse taken off - the same as when she was floated into position. Also some removal of silt may be required to get her out. If this proved too expensive to acheive then cutting her into sections for removal as above may be the only option.

You would need to move a modern concrete road bridge to get her out of where she is. She is trapped there in a triangle between roads

Alistair,
I understand the bridge in place now is is still wide enough for the ship minus sponsons and deckhouse to slide under. This is how she entered the berth she is in now - although since then the bridge has been refitted.
The other option is to cut her into sections and remove the upstream side of th bridge then transport from there . . . .
I'm in Truro in a few weeks time, will grab a few pictures of her and the bridge then.

What about her engine?
Andy
-
Hi PD's....I think Andy...the only steam to be raised will be in the galley :coffee & the :ranting of the Chef cooking in his gumboots ....as the tide runs in............... :hehe :towel....Derek
-
Apparently the engine was removed and sits in a museum somewhere in the Isle of Wight.
-
Engine is on the IoW. She will remain static but it looks as though her future is secure . .
Chris ;D
-
The engine is at Blackgang Chine which is more an amusement park than a museum
-
Here are some pictures of her engines:

They are in superb condition. I'd quite like to see them running in a certain ship.. ;D

Called in to see for myself last week.
It was great to see the work that had gone into getting this right. I have some video that I will post on Youtube when I get chance - the only thing missing was the smell!
Well worth a visit . . one of the best museum exhibits I've ever seen . . .

Hi PD's....& thanks for the engine picks.......you can just imagine the engineer closing the steam inlet valve to the HP cylinder ....looking over to the PORT side bulkhead engine telegraph & making the selection :hammer on the reversing gear quadrant ..... :clap ....Derek

Hi there,
Just seen posts on the Compton Castle, good to see the eninges well care for but sad stuck in a museum, but of course better than scrapped, are there not another set onthe IOW in not such good shape? Caladonia? hope the ship is secure, although good to get her clear of potential development area, better as you say in one piece, but if done properly and only alternative I guess in bits, welding very good these days! one of the few left now, as per my comments on Ryde and others, many thanks,
Johnk

Nay, they're preserved at the Hollycombe Steam Collection in Liphook.

Does this mean work has stopped? It seemed to be progressing in this photo (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wessexandy/4095991601/), taken in October...
-
All stop when I passed recently. A great shame for this 'forgotten' paddler. Oh to see her back opertional . . .

Has anyone heard anything of late about CC ? Last I heard was 'restoration' would continue and a new tenant would be sought.
