Title: International Model Boat Show
Post by: Eddy Matthews on November 13, 2005, 06:19:12 AM
Hi Guys,

I've just got back from the International Model Boat Show in Warwick (England). Although it was a long drive, it was certainly well worth the trip. The other club members thatcame with me bought all sorts and saved a fortune compared to normal prices, and I stumbled across a new electronics company that does a superb range of sound units! JJC is the company name - I'll dig out their address etc later (providing I don't forget!). Unfortunately they don't have a website yet :-(

I'm just finishing a tug so I bought two diesel engine sound units and a tug horn unit - These have to be heard to be beleived! The engine units include full startup sequence, so you can hear the engines fire up and sit at tickover until you hit the throttle - then listen to those babies purr fantastic!

Of particular note is a new smoke unit that JJC is developing. It should be available sometime in december.... This unit uses ordinary tap water (or even pond water!), uses NO heat, and creates volumes of smoke that you could only dream about previously! Not cheap with an estimated price of about £50 (UK Pounds), but I think he's going to have a hard time keeping up with demand!

My mistake, JJC do have a website!

http://www.jjc-electronics.com/

I must tell you that the sounds on the website do NOT do the units justice! They sound a bit cheap and nasty online, but the real things sound superb!

The compnay can also be contacted via:

JJC Electronic Systems
The Old Slaughter House
Unit 5
Alscot Park Stables
Atherstone on Stour
CV37 8BL
ENGLAND

Tel: +44 (0) 1789 459207

Email: sales@jjc-electronics.com

A few of the features that the online sounds DON'T demonstrate - the Turbo Cat Diesel units that I bought have the engine startup sound - Just move the throttle slightly and the engines will start, then moving the throttle further will rev the engines up - Leave the engine idling for more than 20 seconds and they shut down automatically. Amazing!

They do a whole range of sound units, on another one, they do an engine sound for a large V8 as fitted in the DUKW amphibious trucks - That even has a gearchange sound!

You can adjust the tone of all the units to your particular liking to fine tune the sound.  Most of the horn sounds come in a module that has three sounds built in, chose the one that you like the most at the touch of a button!

I think your probably getting the impression that I am now a fan of these units, and you'd be dead right! :-)

His triple expansion stem engine is clearly from a  paddle steamer, you can hear the paddle floats hitting the water.
 Â
He doesn't seem to have a typhoon ship's whistle like  SHIELDHALL

If you want one - a typhoon whistle -  just let him know and if he thinks its viable he will add it to his repertoire!

Hi Eddie,

Did you see these three paddlers - there were others but I didn't get pics. I don't think the big one got far on the water - he was doing 65 point turns despite independent drive to the paddles!

I didn't get to see any of the paddlers on the water Barrie, but that Director class tug was a real monster!

There weren't a lot of paddlers but I did get a few shots.....

Eddy:

Great pictures especially of "Forceful", the Director Class  Tug.  The model does looks larger than 1:48.  Can you say what scale  or it's approximate overall length.

I tried to find the owner to get some more details, but sadly he wasn't around while I was there :-(

At a guess I'd say the model was 1:24 scale, certainly the largest model of a Director class tug I've seen!

I saw it being transported to the pool - I would say between 4 and 5 foot length. I think it had three people with it!

That would make it about 1:32 scale, which could well be correct Barrie - It was very difficult to get a real idea of it's size on the club stand.

Thanks for the link Gerald - To me it's always nice to see photos from shows in other countries. It gets tiring seeing the same old boats in England, so the foreign shows give something a bit more unusual to look at.

Maybe we should have a forum for "Model Shows" where members could tell us about shows they've organised, or shows they've visited? Not just for paddlers, but for all marine models...

Let me know if you think it would be a worthwhile addition to the site - I'll add it if there's enough interest.

Nice display, Gerald... I well remember the  fantastic show you guys always used to put on at the Toronto International Boat  Show and Sportsman Show every year when I lived there.  And the pool is  HUGE.  Just look at the crowds.
 Â
I looked through all the pics but couldn't find too many  paddlers other than the two "die-hards" which still look excellent on the  water.  The Dumas "Mount Washington" always  looks stunning and in the picture, surprisingly stable...how did she  behave?  And that looks like John Brook's Alligator "Max" still  performing well again.  Can't you encourage some of your people to build  more paddlers?  Please let me know if I missed some in the  pictures.
 Â
In any case, you guys always put on a superb show and are a  wonderfully active and dynamic Model Boat Club.
 Well done!
 Â

Hi PJ,
There is a partial shot of a Hjejlen on one of the tables, unfortunately I think that completes the list. I will have to find my roundtooit and get one done myself.

Here's a link to photos taken at the St. louis Admirals Model Boat Show this year. This is the club I'm a member of, but I wasn't able to make the show this year.

A new area for "Model Shows" has been added to the forum, please feel free to use it to tell everyone about any shows you are organising, or any shows you've visited.
