Title: Nile Gunboat "El Fateh"
Post by: RickF on October 18, 2005, 07:49:59 AM
Hi,

Does anyone have a source for plans of this vessel, built at Wivenhoe in 1896 for Kitchener's Sudan Expedititon?

Thanks

Rick

Hello again,

Since there was a plea for more postings, I thought I'd resurect this one. I am still trying to find a plan of Fateh or her sister ships.

I now have lots of information on the early sternwheelers - Tamai, Abu Klea and Metemma -  and the later screw gunboats - Melik, Sultan and Sheik. However, I have still not been able to track down plans for the later sternwheelers - Fateh, Nazir and Hafir.

Regards

Rick

Hi Rick, I have searched my files without success. I am due another visit to the British library publications  store in about 3 weeks time and I will trawl the usual suspect shipbuilding and engineering magazines for that period. The LONDON ENGINEER magazine was particularly keen on printing plans and illustration of small warships so that may be a good starting point . I will keep you posted. Regards, Walter.

Somebody out there MUST know something!

When and where was she built? Was she side or stern  wheel?

Alistair,

El Fateh was built at Wivenhoe in 1896 for Kitchener's Sudan Expedition and was a stern-wheeler. She had two sister ships -  the El Nasir and the El Zafir.

The attached picture is of a model built by Bill Ellis - from photographs. Bill is a local historian from Wivenhoe and built the model primarily as a memento of the local shipbuilding industry. I have spoken to him . He was very helpful but he has no plans.

Oh, the ones that I have researched were built by  Elders in 1885 for Kithchener's expedition, and I think 1885 is the correct  date. One of these, Ibis, still survives, and I have some photos. She was usewd  by the Sudan Railways for many years on the Wadi Halfa to Aswan  route.

Alistair, I think you may have got your Sudan expeditions mixed up. The 1885 expedition was to relieve Khartoum and rescue Gordon. I think this expedition was commanded by Sir Garnet Wolseley (although Kitchener may have beeen part of it). Kitchener's expedition, to recapture the Sudan, was in 1895.
