Greetings,
Is anyone familiar with - and knows the correct terminology for - side
wheelers with inset wheels (a hull with a waist)? The design is known
in swedish as "fiolbåt" or "fiolfartyg" (i.e.. "violin boat" or
"violin ship"). An example is the 'Eric Nordevall' (a replica is being
built http://www.nordevall.com/ ). The idea is as far as I can tell to
make the ship suitable for narrow canals.

Firstly I don't think that I have ever come across a name specially for type
of ship you describe. Violin ship sounds as good as any!!
Nice link. Delighted to know that the project to recreate the Eric Nordevall
is going ahead. All concerned should be heartily congratulated. In Britain,
we don't seem to be able to save an existing and unique tug (John H Amos)
Interesting that the original capsized. Just goes to show that model
paddleships showing stability problems are really very realistic!!
Hope that you will keep us posted as to the construction progress of the
Eric Nordevall.

The common translation that I've seen is "fiddle
steamer;" the less-formal name of a violin might fit
the situation better??
I do wonder about the Eric Nordevall. The pictures of
her on her web site to not show at all clearly that
the wheels are recessed into the sides of the hull,
although there were certainly fiddle steamers built
for the Gota Canal.

I should have guessed - or actually looked at one of the english
language pages :-).

The picture are not too revealing, but according to the dimensions on
one of the pages - forgotten which one - the wheels are recessed. And
E. Nordewall is the only actual ship I could find googling for "fiddle
steamer", "fiolbåt" or "fiolfartyg".
