seems exact and even worth the money. Nevertheless the material is nylon - may be some difficulties with varnish would be expect?

I would suggest that in the case of the nylon type build material that it could be dyed using ordinary black Dylon dye.  Use a strong mix of the dye and soak the parts and they should acquire a coating that's actual "soaked" into the surface and as such, very durable

Am sure material needs can be met since Shapeways offers other material options. For a good reference on what can be made, visit Pat Matthews' 3D printed parts thread over at RC Groups. He prints primarily in "frosted detail" & goes into detail on how to clean & paint the medium on the second link below.
