Turkish Royal Yachts
« on: June 15, 2008, 01:16:15 AM »
I recenly purchased a book "Ertugrul Savarona & Turk Devlet Yatlari" by Ahmet Güleryuz, which covers Turkish Royal and State Yachts. There is a fair chunk of the book on early paddle yachts, as well as the two 20th Century screw steam yachts mentioned in the title.

There are fold out plans at the back of two paddle steamers:

Sürat, ex Swift, a converted sailing ship built in 1801 at Bridport, Dorset
and
Izzettin, built in 1865 by Thames Iron Works

I bought the book from Christian Schmidt Fachbuchandlung in Munich

The ISBN is 978-975-00051-8-2

Alistair,
was there any mention of the 'Buyuk Ada'? This paddler was previously the Blackpool based 'Greyhound'. She was then sold to Irish owners, finally ending her days in Turkish waters.
I have tried to obtain plans etc., to no avail. The best option to date would be to build a stand off scale model, as photographs are available. She also features on the 'Paddle Steamer Memories' DVD.

BUYUK ADA was never an Ottoman Royal of Turkish state yacht, but a ferry running to the Princes Islands, There is a waterline profile of her and three pages of photos in the book "Istanbul Vapurlari", also by Guleryuz.

I suppose you already have he book "Lancashire Coast Pleasure Steamers" published a couple of years ago

Alistair,
Thank you for the information. Reading your posting the book 'Istanbul Vapulari' should be worth researching further. The waterline profile and three pages of photographs do sound interesting.
Do you, (or anyone else reading this post) know where I might start in trying to obtain a copy.

I have a copy of the  book 'Lancashire Coast Pleasure Steamers', and a superb single photograph of her undergoing trials appears in 'Pleasure Steamers' by Bernard Cox.

Research shows her at different times with either one or two masts, and I haven't been able to find when the second mast was added.

Whilst in service in Ireland, I believe she was involved in a boiler incident. Details of this are very few.

Do you know where she sailed whilst in Ireland? after she left Blackpool service her history appears 'patchy', or am I not reading the right books?

The Turkish Book is bilingual, both Turkish and English, the English title being Istanbul Ferries. Christian Schmidy lists it at €103, but you would probably be cheaper getting ti from a bookseller in Istanbul. I was able to find several websites listing the book, but unable to find how to order.

My son works as a cruise ship photogrpher and he obtained a copy for me when he was in Istanbul earlier this year

Irish Passenger Steamship Services Vol 1
by D B MacNeill states that she ran from Belfast to Bangor from 19 May 1923 until she had a boiler mishap in July 1924. She was initially sold from Blackpool to Messrs Wilson and Reid of Belfast, and transferred to the Abercorn SS Co in April 1923. She was replaced there by the screw steamer Robina

Alistair,
Please accept my appologies for distracting from the original posting subject 'Turkish Royal Yachts'. Obviously a lack of knowledge on my part has caused this. Could I mention that the information which you have provided on the 'Buyuk Ada' has been most useful.

I have managed to locate the book on the internet, but I am having the same problem in finding a supplier outside Turkey. Our neighbours are due to visit Turkey for a holiday soon, so a copy may be possible by this route. The ISBN No of the book is 975-000-5120.
