OK. Yes you are right. Probably makes them more economical as river freighters.

I now have drawn the plans for Rhone freight steamer (Porteur du Rhone) "Ocean". The scale is in 1 : 98, so the model`s lenght will be in 1 : 49 scale 320 cm. The very long, flat and narrow hull should be build in this larger scale because of the weight of the steam plant. Deplacement would be no more than 8 - 9 kg.
The original boat has had a giant lying monocylinder high pressure engine with bore of 2 m and 2,5 m stroke and two big boilers side by side. The paddlewheels has had 6,2 m diameter with 16 rigid paddles.
The model should be build in 3 pieces for transport - not very difficult with this flat narrow hull.

Original plan of big monocylinder engine of Porteur "Missouri" with valve gear, similar to american engines of that time. Midship section of "Ocean" and dimensions. With 3,20 m lenght this will be my longest model I ever build. Build will probably start in autumn. Compared with the "Colonel Lamb" I expect a rather simple build.

Back from a trip to France, specially to Rhone valley and Rhone delta. In Tournon sur Rhone I visited the Chateau Musee with some models of Rhone steamers in scale 1 : 100 to 1 : 33. The model of Missouri is more than 4 m long. Very interesting in relation to my projected build of porteur "Mediterranee" also their model - may be not very well build, but good for information of details.

Now I consider to make a 1 : 48 scaled model of Ohio Packet "Buckeye State" from 1850. Since a long time I own the John Fryant plan of this vessel. To make a working model with steam propulsion there must be some alterations to the hull - original wide in scale is only 185 mm. Hull should be extendet to 230 mm. Also the height should be extendet with 10 mm. The boat with a total lenght of 1630 mm, wide of hull 230 and a draft of 30 mm with supposed delta of 0,78 should have a deplacement of approximately 8600 gramm. Not very much for such a big model, but possible with very light build and thin materials - like the original riverboats were made.
I altered the plans like the points. From my sight of view the impression of the moderate extendet hull isn`t disturbing.
The pictures of models are via net from National Postal Museum in Washington and from National Museum of American History, the further model with the red hull is a business like made one.
Compared with the big Mississippi river packets the Ohio ones seems much more slim and less high - also better condition of nautic stability.

Interesting DDSG Danube Remorquer "Johann Baptist", build in Obuda Shipyard in 1853 with American walking beam engine by C. Morgan, New York.
The ship was in use until 1895. As far I know, only two further steamer with this engine were build in Europa - the similar DDSG "Europa" and a further ship also DDSG. The last two boats were short lived, both burned in the 1860-tis.
I have a plan of JOHANN BAPTIST, drawn by Mr. Winkler in Vienna. I think, this would be also an interesting build.

The EUROPA, DDSG. The last boat with walking beam engine was the PONTUS, same company - no picture is existing.

Dear friends and neighbors,
what was the problem of our blog since beginning of february 2024? I wasn`t able for any contact to paddleducks although I tried numberless times. When I tried for log in, in every case an information appears of wrong passwort or similar obsticle.
So I supposed, that our blog has come to an end. I know, that some other members has had the same problem. I`m very glad now, that my apprehensions are not real and the blog is going on.
But now to an idea of future build: I`ve drawn a plan of blockade runner CSS "CONDOR/FLAMINGO" of 1863. There at least 3 models of this three stacked paddler in american museums. It seems a very nice paddler with elegant lines. Because I had the pictures of the models and the dimensions of the original ships it was possible to draw the plan in scale 1 : 42. This scale is a compromise - in scale of 1 : 48 the boat should be a little bit too small for the steam propulsion. Here are some pictures.
