Murpheys Law (or it could only happen to me!
« on: May 22, 2022, 03:05:48 AM »
Lets start at the beggining shall we children ?. About ten years ago a very trim model of the Graupner Glasgow paddle tug appeered at our Clubs Paddler day under the name of PS STERLING. i admired this  model very much and vowed that one day ai would have one of rhese kits. It never came to be. Then unbeknown to me my old friend Eddy Matthews (the same one) bought this very PS Sterling. Again unbeknown to me, He passed it on to Bob Goulder who Sailed it frequently in our club steering competitions. I then lost track of it. I later discovered that he had passed it in to ANOTHER  club member and it languished in his garage for a few years  getting dirtier  and damaged with bits falling off. ( A lot of superglue had been used in its construction which became very brittle, and bulwarks, fittings etc were dropping off. Worst of all The light coloured paint used on the paddle boxes and super structure had absorbed coatings of niccotlne and looked like the ceiling of a run down 1950s pub, various shades of browns tans and other disgusting shades. Anyway, two years ago i bought it, and started a long slow strip down and rebuild. (it took five coats of white acrylic paint to cover the nicotine). This week I had four days on my own (apart from her two dogs),
house-sitting for my granddaughter while she was in Greece . The model went with me for four glorious days of undisturbed modelmaking!. Friday morning it was finished and looking superb. I carefully carried it out to the shed ready for a Sunday relaunch. I DROPPED IT !!! onto a concrete path. I suffer from lack of mobility and am a bit doddery. There was a loud crack and bits flew everywhere. All the bridge staunchions were bent and broken and I gathered it all up and locked it in the shed .
not daring to look at the damage. So there it  will sit until I have the courage to look at it. Doesnt it say somewhere "though shall not covert"?SO, I have decided to build one more paddler, either LORD ELGIN in its cargo ship form or GRACIE FIELDS heroine of Dunkirk. Anyone seen any plans for LORD ELGIN???.
Blessed are the "cracked" -for they let in the light for the rest of us.
