Graupner Glasgow paddle tug
(1/1)
Bruce the modeler:
Just started refurbishing one of these, apart from finding out that I needed nearly 3kg of lead to get the paddles immersed correctly, on the first outing to get the ballasting right I found that a wee bit, well quite a lot of H2O got into the hull. The culprit is I think splash from the wheels coming out of the paddle boxes into the hull. How have others prevented this. It sails great even with a 6v motor, but a lot of work to go.

Bruce, leakage was a common problem for the Glasgow, the water on the deck from the paddle wheels gets in through the plastic shaft covers (shown in the photograph). I never found it ever put the model in any danger, just annoying having to syringe the water out after each sailing.
There was an item in Radio Control Boat Modeller, November/December 1991 edition which mentions this problem. The builder solved it by using a 'mudguard' fitted inside the paddle box.
If a copy of the magazine item would be of help, please message your email.
I never carried out this modification to mine as it was being sold (this is something I now regret).
Bruce the modeler:
Hi Tony, That would be great my copies of that magazine don't go back that far. Scanned apges would be ok.
