Scottish coastal steamer "ST. OLA"
« on: August 03, 2022, 03:03:15 AM »
My third steam driven ship, the "ST. OLA" of 1892 build by Hall, Russel & Company in Aberdeen. I made the model 1991/92. The original ship was in action in northern Scotland between Scrabster and Stromness on Orkney Island from 1892 to 1951. A nice and reliable model. I gave her to a friend in 2012, now he lent her to me for pictures and an article for a german steam journal.
The boat is in scale 1 : 33, her lenght is 135 cm, breadht 21 cm, deplacement ca. 9 kg. The model with it`s simple oscillating engine can be reversed in less than a second. The boat has a little toplast, but this isn`t a disadvance, also with a certain inertia the presentation on water seems close to the original.
The pictures of high resolution - I hope that I can post...

Beautiful Thomas! there is something of magic in the design of 19th /early 20th century merchant ships that is sadly lacking in our modern utilitarian ships which look more like warehouses of floating blocks of flats! The patina of the models age adds to its attractiveness. Well done!! I wouldnt give it back! Regards, Walter
Blessed are the "cracked" -for they let in the light for the rest of us.

Thanks Walter! Yes, I agree - the ship`s appearance - there is some magic. Of course this ships were purpose build, but the technical designer of this long away time respected also harmonic and pleasant shape - in engineering, architectur and so on.

Yesterday I got a mail from a lady from Stromness on Orkney Island. She saw the pictures of the model and wrotes, that the first "St. Ola" is still common by the people of the Orkneys, they would be also interested of the model.
